Take a new look at eating out in Henderson. A new team, fresh menus and a totally different attitude towards service are moving Henderson’s historic – and majestic – Falls Hotel in a new, and very positive, direction. The hotel, lovingly restored in 1996, but taken over by former Michaels managing director Garry Bates and his business partners Nina and Alan Parry last year, is well on the way to establishing itself as The West Auckland destination. Right at the heart of Waitakere City, The Falls not only has a new and highly experienced team but a professional approach to food, wine and quality service akin to some of the best restaurants in Europe. Restaurant manager Alan Parry spent five years as head waiter/manager at London’s prestigious and fashionable Ivy restaurant. His wife Nina, the chef, completed her apprenticeship at one of West Auckland’s most successful restaurants – Michaels – and went on to work in London for Britain’s A-listers.Garry, also a chef, represented New Zealand at the World Culinary Olympics, and has cooked for royalty and government ministers. He is also well known in the Henderson community for his 26-year association with Michaels. The restaurant, housed in an historic, 150 year old New Zealand building, has been sensitively restored. But it’s the food and service that has had the biggest makeover, “We want The Falls to be a place that people come to trust,” says Garry. “It’s very important to us that we are viewed as a restaurant that provides delicious food and wine in a beautiful, historic venue. “My experience at Michaels taught me that restaurants work when they are able to provide consistency. People need to know that they will get great food and service not just one visit in two but 100 percent of the time.“
People with the skills and experience of Nina and Alan help ensure that. We put our hearts and soul into the development of The Falls not only so that West Aucklanders can have a quality local restaurant but also to establish ourselves as a great destination for all Aucklanders. “It’s an amazing place to visit. The park-like surroundings – in summer or winter – are magnificent. And we pride ourselves on making everyone feeling equally at home – whether it’s a family out for lunch or a couple out for a romantic dinner.”
The reconfigured conservatory is also a great place to sample The Falls’ weekend brunch menu, available on Saturday and Sunday until 3pm. “Increasing numbers of New Zealanders have come to love taking the time at the weekend to enjoy a leisurely brunch,” says Garry. “It’s a great way to relax and catch up with friends and family at the same time.” The Falls, open seven days a week, can be found on the corner of Alderman Drive and Edmonton Road, Henderson, and is also available for private functions and group bookings.
